Chapter Sixteen

“Okay, we need some lemonick,” Emily said looking at her list.

“I have a lemon right here,” Natilie held up the lemon.

“No, it definitely means lemonick. It has a notation on the side which says… Not to be confused with Lemons,” Emily read out loud from the old book.

“Oh, I don’t know what that is then. Maybe there will be a description in the glossary?” Natilie asked.

“It doesn’t have a glossary,” Emily sighed, “I guess we’ll need to make another trip to the library. That’s a daunting thought.”

“Yah,” Natilie agreed, “too bad the parlor doesn’t have spell books. That would have been a lot easier.”

“You know, we could do this tomorrow,” Emily suggested hopefully.

“We can, but then we’ll have everyone following us around, bugging us about what we’re doing,” Natilie reminded her.

“What are we doing again?” Emily asked.

“Silly! It was your idea!” Natilie scolded.

“Oh yah, were going to do a little spell which will show one and all, what a true little sour puss Melissa is,” Emily said smugly. “She sure has been getting the twins into a lot of trouble, lately. This should distract her for a while, and give us all a break from the spoiled brat. Why do they believe her, and not Sherie or Ammie?”

“I think they believe the twins,” Natilie reasoned, “they just have other things to concern themselves about.”

“Melissa also knows how to play them,” Emily mentioned, “pick on one, and the other gets protective. They don’t seem to be able to let the other—fight her own battle.”

“Well, they better learn, or life is going to get pretty damn tough,” Natilie pointed out.

“Yah, but Melissa isn’t the one to teach them that lesson,” Emily said sternly, “not this time. Melissa will be going nuts trying to stop her face from scrunching up.”

“This won’t leave her messed up, will it?” Natilie asked with concern.

“It’s not supposed to,” Emily turned the book over. “This whole book is dedicated to forty-eight hour spells. A five hundred paged book, just for that.”

“I guess it should be okay,” Natilie rationalized, “I saw notations from Briana. All the histories say that she was kind to all.”

“Then why is she making notations in this book?” Emily asked.

“Good question,” Natilie shrugged. “She probably had her moments, too.”

“Yah, but she was probably not the vengeful little biatches that we can be,” Emily smiled wickedly.

“Only when called for, or to protect our own,” Natilie looked thoughtful. “There has been a growing rift in the family between those born with magic—and those not. It probably won’t be helping the situation, by us pranking Melissa.”

“Yah well, that’s for those a lot older and wiser than us to deal with. In the mean time—to the library,” Emily pulled Natilie up from the bed.

Emily was staying in Natilie’s bedroom—she had given hers up for Lidia. It wasn’t the first time they had shared a room, and probably wouldn’t be the last. Natilie handed a small flashlight to Emily, and clicked on her own. The two girls crept quietly through the snoring bodies in Adell’s sitting room.
